Caregiver Classes

At Banner Alzheimer's Institute (BAI), our unique model of care supports patients and their families.

To help everyone cope, learn and find joy in everyday living, we offer a variety of classes on ways to live successfully with Alzheimer's/dementia and care for someone with a progressive disease.

COMPASS (Caregivers Of Memory impaired Persons Acquiring Successful Strategies)

This free 90-minute class is a great introduction to caring for someone with Alzheimer's disease. Whether it's someone with a new diagnosis or someone you've been providing care for a while, the class will help you navigate your journey. During the class you will learn the basics about:

  • Progression and treatment of Alzheimer's and related dementias
  • Improved communication skills to avoid arguments and upsets
  • Tips for improving daily living
  • Where to begin to find in-home and community assistance.

Advanced registration is required.

  • Location: BAI,
901 E. Willetta St., Phoenix, 3rd Floor Conference Room
  • Calendar: For dates and times visit our calendar
  • Register: Call (602) 839-6850.

MAPS (Memory Assistance and Planning Session) for Caregivers

The MAPS Program provides in-depth training for caregivers on what to expect in the moderate stage of disease progression, including basic behavioral management skills, communication and care options. In a home-like setting, we will demonstrate care, including bathing; oral care; management of loss of bladder and bowel control; assisting with lifting and walking; assisting with dressing; using special equipment to make life easier; and feeding and nutrition.  We recommend that persons with dementia NOT attend.

By the end of this daylong program, caregivers will be able to:

  • List six things that trigger behavioral problems and how to avoid them
  • Use basic communication skills to avoid confrontation
  • Describe two care options to supplement the care provided by family
  • Meet basic personal care needs for someone with moderate dementia.

Advanced registration is required.

  • Calendar: For dates, times and locations visit our calendar
  • Register: Call (602) 839-6850.

Planning Ahead Classes

Planning Ahead is a free two-hour class to help caregivers understand the importance of planning ahead for legal, financial and medical decisions for individuals with Alzheimer's disease/dementia. You will learn how to access relevant community resources, services and agencies. This class is for caregivers. We recommend that persons with dementia NOT attend.
