Our Community Outreach
Banner Alzheimer's Institute (BAI) is on a mission to end Alzheimer's disease without losing another generation. We believe doing so will take everyone, from every experience and every background, to make the difference and stop Alzheimer's.
As part of our mission, BAI offers outreach services such as education, information and support with a commitment to working with Arizona's underserved populations, including the state's African American, Native American and Latino communities.
Native American Outreach
In 2008, BAI began a Native American Outreach Program to carry on the pioneering work initiated by Sun Health Research Institute in 2003. The program offers outreach services to Arizona's 22 Native American tribes, urban programs and other Native American organizations throughout the state.
The goal of the program is to increase knowledge and awareness about Alzheimer's disease and related dementias in Native Americans through various outreach and education efforts. Our staff collaborate with tribes and Native American programs to develop and offer culturally sensitive services and materials. Events are shaped by each request and target health care providers, family caregivers, paid caregivers, tribal health and elderly programs. A list of options is provided that ranges from educational materials to customizing educational workshops, seminars or CME-accredited programs. Memory screening can be offered or training provided for professionals interested in memory awareness events.
An annual daylong conference is held each year to further heighten awareness and enhance care for Native Americans coping with Alzheimer's and other dementias.
