The Green Memory Study

The Green Memory study will look at whether a naturally derived investigational medication may improve brain function by rebalancing certain bacteria in the gut. Banner Health needs volunteers to participate in this important, innovative study enrolling at Banner Sun Health Research Institute and Banner Alzheimer's Institute.

Alzheimer’s disease in Arizona is a public health threat.

  • 150,000 people ages 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s disease in Arizona.
  • Expected to increase to 200,000 by 2025.
  • 50% of primary care physicians in the U.S. say they are not prepared to handle the increasing number of patients with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease in the next five years.

90% of Alzheimer’s disease clinical studies are delayed by slow volunteer recruitment.

Volunteers in the Green Memory study will:

  • Take three capsules of the investigational medication by mouth twice a day.
  • Receive individualized attention from brain health experts.
  • Be part of the team that is helping to find treatments for Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Help future generations and honor people who had the disease.

Banner Health is looking for volunteers who meet the following qualifications:

  • Are between the ages of 50 and 85.
  • Are experiencing memory issues or have been diagnosed with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Have a study partner who knows them well, is with them three or more days a week, and can come to all study related visits.

The Green Memory study involves a year of treatment with as few as seven clinic visits to Banner and additional research visits conducted by telephone. During the treatment period, 50% of participants will receive the investigational medication in pill form while 50% of participants will receive a placebo (an inactive medication). Every participant may be eligible to receive the investigational medication for 26 weeks after completion of their initial year of study participation. This investigational medication has been approved for use treating Alzheimer’s disease outside the U.S., and the Green Memory study is now being tested in the U.S. There is no cost to participate.

Approximately 80 research clinics across North America are working on the Green Memory study. Over half of these clinics, including Banner Sun Health Research Institute and Banner Alzheimer's Institute, are a part of the Global Alzheimer’s Platform Foundation® network (GAP-Net). GAP-Net sites benefit from sharing knowledge and experience in order to effectively and efficiently work toward research progress in neurodegenerative conditions.
